Julie Carlson - Treasurer (curls at SPCC)
Julie has been around curling her whole life as her mom and dad, Ann and Jeff Carlson, started curling in the late 50’s and early ‘60s. Julie actually started full-time curling in 1984 with strong curling mentors Great Aunt Florence Lindholm (one of the founding members of the St. Paul Bonne Spielers), mom Ann, Rose Marie Barton, Chris McGirl, Jeanne McCann, and Jim ‘Dex” Dexter who taught her how to curl at the old Arden Hills Curling Club back in her younger curling days.
Strongest memories include curling with The Chris McGirl rink her first year when she won the Rhame Trophy (best win-loss record in the Bonnie League), voted Bonnie Best her rookie year, & won the A Flight trophy. Many curlers know this is hard to repeat so Julie started competitive curling, & in 1987-88, curled with The Barb Perrella rink along with teammates Margie Smith and Sally Barry with the team winning the Women’s State Championship, 2nd place in the finals of the Women’s National Championship, & almost winning the first Olympic Trials were held at the SPCC in 1987. Anybody remember when the SPCC cut out the walls on the east side to bring in refrigeration units to host the Olympic Trials in April that year? Yep, it happened & the ice was phenomenal & Julie will never forget those competitive curling memories throughout the years against some of the best Canadian and US curlers in the nation! Julie also has fond memories curling with Sheila Longie now in the Bonnie league & teaching new curlers how to curl in the 5pm Tues open league back in the days (just love those early draws!). In addition, The Big Spiel has been a long-time favorite for Julie meeting curlers from clubs across the nation!
Julie has volunteered for multiple curling & lacrosse boards including Secretary of the MCA, Director of the USCA Board, Board of Directors of the SPCC in addition to being President/VP/Treasurer/Member At Large of MSLax (girl’s youth lacrosse state association) over the years. She currently serves as Treasurer of the St.Paul Bonnie Spielers & really looks forward to serving as the Treasurer of the TCCA. With 25 years of growing lacrosse in the state of MN, she looks forward to bringing that growth experience to the TCCA. She really looks forward to working with all the TCCA board members, having some laughs along the way but more importantly, bringing creative ideas to the table on how to spend TCCA’s money to further the growth of the Twin Cities curling clubs and helping each club grow their curler numbers and skill levels. Feel free to reach out to the TCCA on requests and ideas you have!
